What’s on Your Workdesk Wednesday – #541

on my desk…

Hello crafty ladies! It’s that time again! For those of you that aren’t familiar with WOYWW (What’s On Your Workdesk Wednesday), head on over to Julia’s Stamping Ground and you will find desks from all around the world where we get to snoop on other crafter’s desks.

Coloring a sugar skull.

Well this week I thought I would share with you two things I have been working on – coloring and creating custom notepads.

Over the weekend, I was at my in-laws watching football and decided to color in one of my coloring books. I had a goal to color at least one page in all of my books by the end of the year. I have to confess it’s an epic fail!! I am a lot slower at completing pages so hitting this goal is quite a challenge. Anyway, I wanted to color something in Johanna Bassford’s Magical Jungle coloring book but I have also been craving coloring some fall scenes. But this coloring book does not really fit that theme. Be stubborn I decided to flip through it and I was pleasantly surprised to find this page and it reminded me of Sugar Skulls from Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Day of the Dead ( Día de los Muertos )is an interesting holiday celebrated in central and southern Mexico during the chilly days of November 1 & 2. Even though this coincides with the Catholic holiday called All Soul’s & All Saint’s Day, the indigenous people have combined this with their own ancient beliefs of honoring their deceased loved ones.
They believe that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31, and the spirits of all deceased children (angelitos) are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November 2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them.

The tradition of sugar skulls is for families to decorate their loved ones’ ofrendas with both large and small handmade sugar skulls.[4] Children who have died, represented by small sugar skulls, are celebrated on November 1. The larger sugar skulls represent the adults, whose celebration takes place on November 2. It is believed that the departed return home to enjoy the offering on the altar.[5]

I was able to complete the skull while watching the game and plan to finish the background this week. I have some ideas and techniques I would like to try. I did pull out my gold gel pen to color in some areas which makes it pop but unfortunately it isn’t easy to capture in photos. So you will have to trust me.

Right side of my desk.

On the right side of my desk, I actually cleaned my inbox and came up with an idea of how to place items in it instead of piling things a mile high which hasn’t inspired me in the past. But as you can see I stood some items up and now when I look at it, I don’t get the feeling of dread I have had for months. I actually think I will get some things done. You can also see my boiled eggs, its morning hear and I am on a cleanse so boiled it is today. You can also see I snagged some more green, black and red cardstock packs in preperation for the holiday crafting.

My witch pen.

Have you ever been in a store and you see something that brings you back to your childhood. I was in the mall with my youngest this past weekend and I saw this witch pen that can box. It has two buttons to push on the back to make her punch each arm. It reminded me of that old Rock ’em Sock ’em game from my childhood. So I bought the witch for me and the pumpkin for my son. I told him whenever we disagree about something this week, we can have it out with our pens.

One more look because she is so cool!

My second craft project I wanted to share is the custom notepads. Remember I shared a notepad project with you about 5 weeks ago saying I wanted to make custom notepads from notepads from the dollar store?

Custom notepads I made.

One of my crafty friends that lives several hours away and I decided to return to a fun thing we used to do years ago. We decided to craft for an hour and a half on Fridays via video call. So that is when I worked on and completed these notepads. Unfortunately nearing the end of our session, my ATG gun ran out of tape so I didn’t complete them. But it was so much fun to catch up while tackling an overdue project.

I used coordinating Nuvo drops on the covers. That was fun but they had to sit and dry for a few hours before I could put them away.

Well I sure do feel like I am extra chatty this week so I am going to stop right here and thank you for sticking to the end of my ramble. That’s what I am up to. Now I need to come see what you are all doing.

Have a blessed day!

On my desk…

I finished this page! I procrastinated for a few days and then I decided I better get it done since I told you last week that I would share when I finish.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with WOYWW (What’s On Your Workdesk Wednesday), head on over to Julia’s Stamping Ground and you will find desks from all around the world where we get to snoop on other crafter’s desks.

I used a white jelly roll pen for highlights. I always wanted to use my white gel pen on my coloring pages and haven’t really found the right one to do so. On this page, I used it on some of the bubbles, on the coral and some of the other creatures.

The completed page.

I am so impressed with the paper. There is a little warping but I kind of like the look. It lends itself nicely to the aquatic theme. The reverse page has a large jellyfish so I think it will look really cool.

Happy mail arrived yesterday!

I forgot that I had pre-ordered these books it was so long ago. So it was a pleasant surprise to open the box and see these beauties. They are both high quality hard covered books. Spirit Animals is by the same illustrator as the book, Daydreams that I colored above. So now I have two of her books.

A peek inside Flora.

What perfect time for Flora to arrive. This book makes me think of both fall and spring so I can see me having fun coloring this beauty this fall. I mean just look at it. How cute is that little tree house? Oh and look at the little hammock.

One more peek in Flora.

A teapot house must be colored by me. I absolutely love it. Look at all the flowers surrounding it. So many possibilities!

This one is so cool I like that they designed a tech theme to go with the spirit animal spider and lady.

You all know I like butterflies and this one does not disappoint. It’s beautiful.

Let’s see, maybe I should make a goal to color at least one page in each by the end of September. Let’s see if I can do it.

Today is my boys first day of school so I am a bit emotional. I always cry thinking about how fast they are growing. My youngest looked so small entering the big building. I will feel better after a few days but the transition is always hard for me too.

Well enough of that, I am off to go snooping!

my desk…

Hello! Sorry I am late. I had class last night, and I had a hard time falling asleep when I got in bed, which resulted in a slow start to the day. But here I am to share my space with you crafty mavens!

For those of you that aren’t familiar with WOYWW (What’s On Your Workdesk Wednesday), head on over to Julia’s Stamping Ground and you will find desks from all around the world where we get to snoop on other crafter’s desks.

This is my first real dive into my Dewert Inktense pencils. I have dabbled a little but this the first time I really went all in on the process. Today I am using my new Daydreams coloring book by Hanna Karlzon. It’s hardcover and absolutely lovely. I highly recommend it. The paper quality is suitable for pencils and water color. Then I found a Youtuber that used the Intense pencils on this page in her video. I loved her color schemes so much I just had to lift them!

Unfortunately I have to run out later and take my son to a doctors’ appointment or else I would spend the time to finish this page. I only have a little left. It has taken me several sessions to get this far but I think I can complete the remaining items in one sitting. I have to practice more with the blending but it is very relaxing working with these pencils and this paper. I look forward to coloring more in this book. I love this process of discovery. I know I have a lot to learn but definitely want to improve my skills with this medium.

Well I’m already late to the party so I am going to sign off so I can go snoop.

Happy crafting my friends!!

What’s On Your Workdesk Wednesday #529

my desk…

Hello my crafty friends! It’s me! I am sitting out on my deck on this lovely morning typing this post. I borrowed my son’s phone yesterday to take a picture of my desk. His phone takes the most amazing pictures. I still won’t cave and buy a new phone.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with WOYWW (What’s On Your Workdesk Wednesday), head on over to Julia’s Stamping Ground and you will find desks from all around the world where we get to snoop on other crafter’s desks.

So let’s take a look at my desk. I found this amazing coloring book on the bargain table at Barnes and Noble. For any of you that are new to my site, I love nature and all that it entails. I grow a flower and vegetable garden on my property and am a lover of birds.

The beautiful cover.

I had taken my boys to the bookstore over the weekend to fight the heatwave we were experiencing and came across this lovely coloring book that simply had to come home with me. It includes 39 birds of paradise from the New Guinea region. The cover has gold foil accents with the most amazing images. I could not walk away from it.

A coloring page inside the book.

I was even more excited when I opened up the book because on the left side there is a small image of the bird and below it is listed the name of the bird and a little bit of information about them. In the back they list the birds and have a color photographs of all of the birds. The book is produced by The CornellLab of Onithology, who is the world leader in the study of conservation birds.

They also included a link to watch the birds that they filmed on YouTube. Grab a cup of tea and a snack and prepare to be amazed. I can’t believe how magnificent the male birds feathers are. My husband and I watched this and some more videos on these amazing creatures.

The pages are also perforated so they can be easily removed.

One thing I notice about me, is that I get hyped up when I see a coloring book and then when I get it home, I usually set it aside for a while before I begin coloring in it. But this one, I really wanted to dive in. So yesterday, I spent a short time doing just that. I have some amazing glitter gel pens that I have really been eager to use in my coloring books. So I held my breath and went for it. Because many of the birds in this book have iridescent feathers so I thought I would try to incorporate my gel pens in the coloring. I am not sure how much I like it but will know when I finish. I am using my Prismacolors as my main source.

I used the color picker to help me find the colors.

I am going to try and sneak up there today and continue coloring. I would like to get back to regular coloring sessions but with the construction still going on at our home, and all of my other things I need to do, it gets pushed aside. Well I think I will stop this chatter and go snoop on some desks! Have a crafty day!
