30-Day Coloring Challenge Part 2: Day 2

challenge_graphic-June-650Hello Everyone! Well today I was inspired by the blog hop on The Daily Marker which is hosting this coloring challenge. I went to Laura Bassen’s site for the hop and she created this card technique only her’s was with circles. Unfortunately I ran out of my Copic Xpress paper so I had to use a cheaper alternative to try this out.  So the blending didn’t happen as smooth as I would like but I still love the result.

This month many of my family and friends (including me) have a birthday. So I am quickly working to make cards to send. Thought that would make a perfect coloring assignment for today.

day2I used the hex chart again and it was really helpful for selecting colors. When my order of xpress it comes in, I am definitely going to make more. I used my Silhouette to cut out the heart balloons in various sizes.

My question for you is this – should I add lines for string on the balloons or leave them floating in the air?

Happy coloring!! See you tomorrow!

Belinda’s Book Nook: Book Haul at the Used Book Superstore

may20_2015a

I recently found some new authors at the used bookstore. I did know one of them and had on my TBR and that is Robert Galbraith (J. K. Rowling) but I never read any of the Harry Potter books (don’t hate).  So this haul was completely on the description and maybe a little cover love!

The first is The Case of the Missing Servant by Tarquin Hall

About the author:

Tarquin Hall is the author of the Vish Puri mysteries, set in India. The first in the series, ‘The Case of the Missing Servant’, was named by the New York Times as a Notable Crime Book and given starred reviews by Kirkus, Library Journal and Booklist. Hall divides his times between London and Delhi with his wife, Indian-born journalist Anu Anand, and their young son.

The book:

Watch out Alexander McCall Smith! Here comes the first novel by the highly acclaimed writer Tarquin Hall in an entrancing new mystery series set in India.

The portly Vish Puri is India’s most accomplished detective, at least in his own estimation, and is also the hero of an irresistible new mystery series set in hot, dusty Delhi. Puri’s detective skills are old-fashioned in a Sherlock Holmesian way and a little out of sync with the tempo of the modern city, but Puri is clever and his methods work.

The second book is The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith

Now I know you know J. K. Rowling so I will skip a mini bio on her. But the book is about:

A brilliant debut mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel’s suicide. After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

The third book is titled: The Samurai’s Garden by Gail Tsukiyama

About the author:

Born to a Chinese mother and a Japanese father in San Francisco, Gail Tsukiyama now lives in El Cerrito, California. Her novels include Women of the Silk (1991), The Samurai’s Garden (1995), Night of Many Dreams (1998), The Language of Threads (1999), Dreaming Water (2002), and The Street of a Thousand Blossoms (2007).

About the book:

A 20-year-old Chinese painter named Stephen is sent to his family’s summer home in a Japanese coastal village to recover from a bout with tuberculosis. Here he is cared for by Matsu, a reticent housekeeper and a master gardener. Over the course of a remarkable year, Stephen learns Matsu’s secret and gains not only physical strength, but also profound spiritual insight. Matsu is a samurai of the soul, a man devoted to doing good and finding beauty in a cruel and arbitrary world, and Stephen is a noble student, learning to appreciate Matsu’s generous and nurturing way of life and to love Matsu’s soul-mate, gentle Sachi, a woman afflicted with leprosy.

The final book is titled, The Last Dickens by Matthew Pearl

About the author:

Matthew Pearl is the author of the novels The Dante Club, The Poe Shadow, The Last Dickens, The Technologists, and The Last Bookaneer. His books have been New York Times bestsellers and international bestsellers translated into more than 30 languages. His nonfiction writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, and Slate.com. He has been heard on shows including NPR’s “All Things Considered” and “Weekend Edition Sunday,” and his books have been featured on Good Morning America and CBS Sunday Morning.

Matthew Pearl grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and is a graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School. He has also taught literature and creative writing at Harvard University and Emerson College, and has been a Visiting Lecturer in law and literature at Harvard Law School. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

About the book:

Matthew Pearl reopens one of literary history’s greatest mysteries in his most enthralling novel yet, a tale filled with the dazzling twists and turns, the unerring period details, and the meticulous research that thrilled readers of bestsellers The Dante Club and The Poe Shadow.

Boston, 1870. When news of Charles Dickens’s untimely death reaches the office of his struggling American publisher, Fields & Osgood, partner James Osgood sends his trusted clerk Daniel Sand to await Dickens’s unfinished novel–The Mystery of Edwin Drood. But when Daniel’s body is discovered by the docks and the manuscript is nowhere to be found, Osgood must embark on a transatlantic quest to unearth the novel that will save his venerable business and reveal Daniel’s killer.

Don’t count out used book stores. I have found many gems in them.

Happy reading my friend!

30-Day Coloring Challenge Part 2: Day 1

challenge_graphic-June-650Do you remember the coloring challenge I participated in back in March?  Well if you do, it’s back!! Kathy at The Daily Marker is at it again. She hosted the challenge in March and now she’s at it again for June.  As you all know, my life is very crazy right now so I am trying to dial it back so I can get back to what I enjoy doing – my crafts.

The Challenge begins today and ends on June 30th.  All I have to do is spend a minimum of 5 minutes and color each day then share what I am creating. They don’t have to be finished cards or projects, just coloring. I like this because for me it takes the pressure off and let’s me play. So on some days I might have something complete and on others you will just see what I’m playing with. I will mostly be using my Copics, but I will also use my watercolor paint, watercolor pencils and distress markers from time to time. I hope by blogging and putting my stuff on Instagram, I will stay honest to the task.

To find out more if you would like to participate you should click here.

Having said all that, the last challenge I went strong for 11 days straight then things got wonky and then I picked up day 16-22 and then I fell off. So I aim to do better and that might not be all the way to 30 days or it might be. Let’s just see what happens. I have jury duty this month, I wonder if I could bring my markers on that day? hee hee.

So today I managed to squeeze a little time in to color up an image for a magnetic bookmark I wanted to make.

day1aI used an image from an old Flourishes stamp I have. I really miss that company. They had amazing stamps. They are so pretty you don’t even have to color them. I saw instructions for using dies to make a magnetic bookmark and took out some of my dies to find the right size.

day1bThis is the second time I am using my new Hex Chart from Sandy Allnock. It really is a great way to find the colors for my projects. It shows you how different colors relate very different from the Copic color chart. I like having both but am definitely seeing the benefit of having this one. I will write more about it as I use it for more projects. I can also easily see what I really need and what can wait when I look at the chart. Since we all know, Copics are an investment (nice way of saying expensive!!).

day1cI followed the instructions and adhered the magnets before attaching the patterned paper. I love Zinnias so this stamp makes me happy. Now I can see it every time I open my book.

day1dI think I will use a stronger magnet next time. This one isn’t as strong as I would like.

Well day one is complete. I won’t always be able to complete a project but I will try to stick to coloring a minimum of 10 minutes and try to keep up with posting it this time around. I post on Instagram too so I need to figure out an efficient process so not as to make this work instead of play.

I hope you find 10 minutes today to color. It’s not just for kids!!

Have a blessed night and I will be back tomorrow with day 2.

Project Life Week 14 – A Week of Family Happenings

projectlifelogo1

I’m back!! I have been swallowed up by life and many projects got put on the back burner, project life being one of them. So I’m climbing my way back out of the whole and I am now able to bring you week 14 of my Project Life which was a busy but fun week.  week14aI of course ended up cutting a page protector to make an insert to accommodate my problem of wanting to include way too many photos.

I included my current book club read at the time which was The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. That was the first book by that author that I read but I thoroughly enjoyed it and even recommended to a friend who also read and enjoyed it. You can read my review here.

I took a few candid photos of Apollo and I included my March design for my ATC swap.

week14fI love the photo I included of Apollo waiting at the window for Leao to return via taxi from a business trip. It is one of those moments that made my heart so happy. I think I realize how much they love their dad because I witness these type of moments. I actually sent the photo to Leao while he was riding home in the taxi to show him how much he was missed.  Just precious.

week14c

For the insert I cut a 12 x 12 page protector down to include more photos. I do this because I want my inserts to be smaller than the regular 12 x 12 page protector.

It included a candid of Apollo in Barnes and Noble. They still love this place and so we go quite regularly. I also included and journaled about Apollo and how much joy he has for being a part of my monthly ATC swap. I took a picture of him sorting the cards in preparation for mailings. I also included bookmarks I made for Nicholas’ class since they read, “Wonder”, I made custom “Wonder” bookmarks.

week14d

This is the back side of the insert. I included the photo of the day I received my jury duty notice. I mean come on, why me? I have been called to jury duty since I was in college (which is a while back now) and I still meet people that have never been called. What? Not fair!! I also included Apollo on Easter morning getting his basket and a picture of the yummy spread my mother-in-law made for Easter Dinner.

week14eI just included photos on the second page from Easter with family. I didn’t put any embellishments on this page because my goal was to get it documented and complete.

So I hope to keep climbing out of this whole so that I can return next week with week 15.

Happy memory keeping my friends!

Belinda
