Belinda’s Book Nook Book Review: Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel

Sleeping Giants

Title: Sleeping Giants
Author: Sylvain Neuvel
Copyright: April 26th 2016
Genre: science fiction
Format: e-book  Pages: 320

Wow, it’s been a while since I have written a review. Don’t be fooled, because I have still been ferociously reading books! This is one I recently read.

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

A girl named Rose is riding her new bike near her home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. But the firemen who come to save her peer down upon something even stranger: a little girl in the palm of a giant metal hand.

Seventeen years later, the mystery of the bizarre artifact remains unsolved—its origins, architects, and purpose unknown. Its carbon dating defies belief; military reports are redacted; theories are floated, then rejected.

But some can never stop searching for answers.

Rose Franklin is now a highly trained physicist leading a top secret team to crack the hand’s code. And along with her colleagues, she is being interviewed by a nameless interrogator whose power and purview are as enigmatic as the provenance of the relic. What’s clear is that Rose and her compatriots are on the edge of unraveling history’s most perplexing discovery—and figuring out what it portends for humanity. But once the pieces of the puzzle are in place, will the result prove to be an instrument of lasting peace or a weapon of mass destruction?

My Thoughts:

I heard about this book from the online book community and it sounded like a good sci-fi fix. So I placed it on an e-book hold before it was released.  I was more than thrilled to receive the email informing it was available from the library to read.

I jumped right in and honestly found this book so easy to step into. I wasn’t sure if I would go for the interview transcripts format but I actually loved it. It kept the pace moving nicely while making it easy for the reader to keep up. What draws me to science fiction is the possibilities, the unknown, and the mystery. This book had a little of each. So I was pleasantly satisfied.

I don’t want to spoil this book for any intended readers so I won’t say more except that it was a fast read and very enjoyable. I also should point out, that it is the first book in what might be a series or a trilogy. Not sure which. But to be honest, it was a great stand alone read too.

I will be back with more books soon. Because I have been devouring so many. I hope you fill your summer with great reading adventures. They sure do make the summer even more special for me.

Although I enjoy science fiction, I can’t say I have read a lot, but from my perspective, I would rate this book a 4 1/2.

Happy reading!

Home Improvement update

boysroom1

Hello Everyone! Finding my blogging rhythm has been quite a challenge but here I am now.  So the last time I checked in, Leao was working on renovating the boy’s room. Well it came out great. The paint looks nice the floors are so pretty and we managed to separate the beds and give it a more mature look. I feel like the way the desks and beds are laid out, reminds me of a dorm room. So when I go into see them at night I ask how the “freshman” are doing in their new space.

boysroom2

I want to order them new sheets and comforters and for the moment, I have put a hold on putting anything on the walls. Because as many of you may know, kids’ like to stick everything up on the wall and I mean everything!  There is often no logical design just a place to stick up their “stuff”.

After seeing the time frame of this project, we have decided to hold off on the other rooms on the second floor and renovate them in the fall. That way our summer days won’t be locked into a project. So I must endure carpeting in my craftroom and bedroom a little longer.  But I know it’s so worth the wait.

I will share more photos once I buy their new bed linen.

Have a blessed day friends!

Home improvement projects

2ndFloorReno1

Hey you! I have neglected this place for a bit but for good reasons. We are working on some home improvement projects for our second floor. We started with the boys room on Thursday. I helped Leao remove all of the furniture, clothes and books.  We disassembled the boys’ bunk beds and put their beds in our room while we work.  My father-in-law came to help my husband remove the dreaded popcorn ceiling (which we tested first for lead) and then removed the carpet in the room. The last time we painted the boys room was about 12 years ago and I picked Disney colors. So they needed some big boy colors this time around.

2ndFloorReno2

Above is the original colors and the carpet.

2ndFloorReno3

Above is them painting after they taped it all up.

2ndFloorReno4This is the new color which will allow me to add accents in their favorite colors (orange and black). They originally requested we paint it orange and black. I told them no, that they have to live with this a while but that I can find accents and comforters in the colors of their choices.

Today we will be ordering the bamboo flooring for their room. I am really looking forward to a much cleaner and allergy reduced area.  The flooring has too sit out 5 days before it can be installed so that it can expand prior to installation and it takes up to 7 days for the flooring to arrive. I am hoping that it comes fast so that we can wrap up their room in another week and a half.

Once their room is complete they will order the bamboo flooring for our room and begin. Which I am really excited about since we always said we would do our room last and 12 years seems like long enough to me. So I want to go bold and do something sophisticated for our private space.

So between the fact that all sorts of items are being stored in my craftroom, tending to my garden and keeping up with the year-end calendars of my boys, I will not be able to work on Belinda’s Crafts work for some time.  I usually take the summer off but this is a bit early.

Happy spring cleaning friends!

On My Nightstand: Books, Ebooks, Audiobooks and Graphic Novels

onmynightstandMay-16_2016

Hey!! How are you doing? I have been away for quite some time. I have been working on spring cleaning projects around the house and loving the results. I have come to realize that I attach way too much sentimental thoughts to “things” in my home and this year, I am turning it on it’s head with my spring cleaning efforts. I began a few weeks ago and cleaned out my craft room and restructure it’s layout and I am more than half way complete and love the energy when I enter the space.  More on that later.

Despite my “Cleaning bug” I still have managed to keep my reading up. I am in love with all things books so it is easy for me to fit time even if it’s 15 minutes here or there.  So I thought I would update you with what’s “On My Nightstand”:

onmynightstandMay-16_2016b

While in college I first came across literature that taught me about the Japanese Internment camps here in the US. I never came across this information prior to then and I was surprised. I had this first book on my TBR list for a while and while in New Jersey last month, I purchased it. The book is called, “When the Emperor was Divine” by Julie Otsuka. It is a historical fiction following a family to an internment camp in Utah.  The second book called, “Gaijin: American Prisoner of War” is a graphic novel I came across at the library and decided it would be nice to see another approach to the topic.

onmynightstandMay-16_2016cMy third read is a brand new science fiction release by Sylvain Neuvel called, “Sleeping Giants“. I put myself on the wait list for this book a while back and was so thrilled when it came in last week. I am really enjoying this story and just found out it is the beginning of a series. So if you don’t like long waits, then I would hold off a while since the next book is slated for the summer of 2017.

onmynightstandMay-16_2016dMy final book is an audiobook by Tessa Harris and is called, “The Anatomist’s Apprentice“. It is a the beginning of a mystery series set in eighteenth-century England featuring an anatomist and the first forensic detective. It sounds very interesting and I just started listening to it today at work. So I will keep you posted.

So those are what’s on my nightstand.  What are you reading right now?

Happy Reading!

Belinda
