Happy Monday – Cherishing Family time

familyfun1

Hello Everyone and happy Monday! With a new week comes new opportunities and adventures. I look forward to all of them as it seems summer is quickly leaving. A pleasant surprise came last week when we found out that Nick’s start date at his new school has been pushed out from today to next Monday. So he received the news of an extra week to celebrate summer with joy, as did I.

Today while I was watering the garden I was reflecting on last week and quality time spent with family.  We wrap routines and traditions into our days to come together as a family.  But at times, Leao or even my work schedules creep into our family time so when we do take time to be together, we make it special. We tried out a new restaurant last week and Apollo almost had me wet my pants when he looked on the menu and said, “Mom, look Sangria!”. I’m pretty sure I didn’t make eye contact with our waiter until our entrees arrived!!familyfun3Last year was our first year attending the Boston Comic Con and this weekend it arrived in Boston so we took the boys.  It was a flurry of people, comics, costumes and all around fun. I normally don’t like to be in crowds that dense, but I took one for the team! It’s nice when we attend events because work can’t interfere and I love the feel of our little unit.  Nick knew exactly what comics he was looking for and I even had a graphic novel in mind for myself. Apollo decided that he would add more Lego figures for his collection so we hunted down tables that sold them.

Once again, I was floored by all of the costumes. I mean, it was so much fun seeing all the costume details of participants. The fun thing is to ask people to take their photo. One of the things I learned from attending the first Comic Con, is that you can ask people to take their photos. Though they are strangers they seem to love the opportunity to show off their hard work. So I snapped away at all the fun sights while navigating the massive crowd and ensuring my family was intact. I kind of used Apollo as my steering wheel as we wound our way through the crowds carefully trying to catch glimpses of all the displays.

familyfun7Apollo spotted The Mystery Machine on our way in to the convention center and we had to stop to take a photo. We still enjoy watching classic Scooby Doo so it was so much fun to see a real live Mystery Machine.familyfun8As the boys get older, it might be more challenging to find activities that everyone wants to do. So I am cherishing all these little memories and locking them in my heart for future savoring!

Have a blessed day!

Happy Monday – Letting go of Busy and Embracing More Stillness

mondayaugust8

Hello and happy Monday! I had a really nice weekend with family and now I’m recharged and ready for this week. This is Nick’s final week of summer so I want to make sure we put some fun into it!

I was listening to a podcast this morning while exercising about being busy. I like when something makes me pause and think about it a bit so I thought I would spread the word.

It seems like our current culture puts a high value on being “busy” and devalues stillness.  I remember the days prior to smartphones and tablets even prior to pagers. But now down time has been squeezed out by 24-hour access to anyone and everything. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy using my iphone and computer and e-reader.  But somewhere along the line, we lost the value of stillness.  So much so that we find it hard to do both physically and mentally. We associate stillness with laziness and feel guilty if we engage in it.

Today, with this beautiful weather, I am working out on my deck listening to the breeze in the leaves while I work. This is something I love to do, I imagine it’s an ocean and the waves are cresting.  I enjoy spending Spring, Summer and Fall months on this deck. But lately I have noticed that I don’t stay long enough to be still. I won’t just sit with nature and be, I will grab a book (which is great) or try to knock off something on my to-d0 list. I want to be still but guilt creeps into my thoughts and I move onto something else.

I’ve read that when we start forgetting things, we automatically think dementia or Alzheimer’s is our fate but the fact is that we are over worked and stressed. We have too many things on our lists and we don’t take natural stillness breaks.  I say, why not build it into your day. It’s not a natural occurrence but we can make it a new habit that can benefit us in many ways. Start small with a 5 minute stillness break each day and then add more throughout your day. You don’t have to meditate, you just have to be still and move towards comfort with it. So when I finish this post, I am going to silence my phone, go sit on my comfy chair on this deck and be still for a bit without guilt.

I thought I would share photos of Apollo watering my flowers this weekend. I hope that one day, when he owns his own home, he will grow a garden and find ways to fit stillness into his days.

Have a blessed day!

My Reading Habits and Current Reads…

2016SummerTBR

Reading Habits

Hey you! I hope you have a book in your bag, on your lap, in you car, or next to your bed. Today, I am taking a look at my reading habits. Back in May, I had this wonderful, well-intentioned idea to create a summer TBR list. I see all of the booktubers doing it and I wanted in. So I had fun walking around my bookshelves and selecting books. My criteria for selecting a book was to select books that would be fun to read in the summer and that have been on my TBR for a long time. Since I am always adding to the list and own a lot of books, this seemed to be a brilliant plan. I even stacked them next to my chair in my reading nook so that I could see them and my progress as I completed them.

Fast forward, August 3 and I have only read 1 1/2 books from this Summer TBR. AAHHH!!! What? Yes. No need to re-read my last statement, I only read 1 1/2 of the books. It’s like once I add them to a scheduled TBR, I don’t read them. The books on this list, my friend, are amazing. I won’t go into details about them for I will be reviewing them when I do actually read them. The one I read and the one I almost finished are not included in the photo.

My point is this, sometimes, it isn’t necessary to add so much structure especially on such a leisure activity and during summer, when we tend to be hopping around like crazy.  This is not to say I didn’t read, I read plenty. I can’t promise I won’t create TBRs because let’s face it, I love me some lists!  I list everything. It would be like cutting off my arm if I said I won’t do it again. But I will say that I will add less and keep room for more spontaneity. Lesson learned.

Currently reading

It is not that I haven’t been reading like the crazy book lover I am but that I have been reading whatever fancies me. So stay tuned for some more reviews. Sometimes I see something on Booktube and I go pick it up at the library or download it from Overdrive to my Kindle.

On to what I am currently reading:

Lab Girl by Hope Jahren – I will definitely review this book here once I complete it because it is lovely. I don’t usually drag good books out long as I have this one but I feel like it is so wonderful to experience during my summer months. So come back soon for a review on this one. (This is actually one from my Summer TBR.)

Crispus Attucks: Black Leader of Colonial Patriots by Dharathula H. Millender – This is one of Apollo’s summer reading books so we are reading it together. I know who Crispus Attucks is but definitely learning more right along with Apollo.

Fables Volume 3: Storybook Love by Bill Willingham – This graphic novel series is great. When I just need a break from the heavy I find this series fits the bill.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce – I just started this book yesterday. It is a bookclub selection and so far it is a fun read. Book review will go up as soon as I complete it.

I hope you all are having some fun this summer and with your book selection.

I will be back soon with some reviews.

Happy reading!

Happy Monday!! Weekend happenings, great neighbors and varying work locations

cafeworking

Hello! Happy Monday!  One of the many things I enjoy about working on my business is that I can vary my work locations. I spend a majority of the time in my home office which is a bright and cheery craftroom.  During spring, summer and early fall, I will work at least a day or two on my deck so I can gather inspiration for my garden. So today, it is Nick’s first day of training at his new school so I decided to take Apollo with me to Panera and work outside my home office. I brought a workbook and he had to complete a section before he could work on his laptop. He is into coding and has learned a great deal over the summer. Leao worked from home today so he is joining us too. So we will stay here for a few hours and then grab lunch (Apollo’s favorite – chicken noodle soup!) and then head to pick up Nick from school.

friendtime

I am also happy because I am coming off a great weekend, especially because I had the opportunity to spend time with my dearest friend, Natana. She just flew in from California. We went to lunch at one of my favorite Japanese restaurants and then headed out for a little retail therapy. When we were in college, we used to go shopping and always laugh how we would pick out the same top in a different color. Then we would somehow end up in one dressing room. This time was no exception. I’m sure we drove the sales associates crazy requesting different sizes and colors.  Since she moved to California, we typically hang out at my house or go to eat.  So doing our girly thang, was a lot of fun.

phlox1While walking in my flower garden this weekend, I had to stop and pause when I saw the varigated Phlox in bloom. My former neighbor, Inez gave it to me before she moved so when it bloom, I always think about her. This year, I have come to more deeply appreciate the relationship I had with her and how it was a true blessing to have a neighbor that brought joy into our lives.phlox2Well I hope Nick is having a great day. I am sending positive energy his way in hopes that he is having a good time and adjusting to the new environment.

Have a blessed day!
