Tea Time Tuesday: Making Loose Tea

christmas-gift1

Leao bought me a beautiful new tea steeper from Teavana for Christmas and two new loose teas. I drink both bagged and loose tea. I love the idea of loose tea, because it’s fresh and I like the control over loose teas.

More people in the US drink tea from tea bags, I believe mainly for convenience and the price. But loose tea is not that much more expensive. Especially when you think of the quality factor.

There is, of course, a huge taste difference. Teabags generally contain bits of tea leaves (typically fannings and dust), not whole leaves, and these leaf fragments brew up a nice cup of blah tea. As any tea expert will tell you, one of the essential requirements of brewing tea is giving the leaves enough room to expand so that their flavor is properly extracted. Because space is limited in a traditional teabag, the size of the tea leaf is smaller to compensate. Thus, the quality of the flavor is decreased. Thus, loose tea reigns supreme.

For this reason, tea steepers are ideal. You can actually see the leaves expand while they infuse the water with yummy goodness.

Adagio teas is a site that you can order loose tea and they kindly break down the expense per cup so you know exactly where your money goes.

A lot of times people avoid loose tea because they think it requires a lot of expensive equipment. You don’t have to buy a fancy steeper from Teavana there are other more economical options but remember it is a one-time buy that will give you access to high quality tea.

If only you could put your nose over this steeper when I finished steeping the tea, the aroma is intoxicating. The cinnamon is heavenly.  Nothing like loose tea so I dare you to try it. It’s fun and there are so many to choose from, I promise you will never be bored!

Happy sipping!

Happy New Year…I’m Back!!!

christmas2015a

Wow, it’s 2016!! What a great year 2015 was and how fast it went. I think that something we say when we are getting older. Because when I was younger, I don’t remember thinking that. One of my goals for this year is to make every day count. It’s a saying we hear and don’t heed. I am trying to convince the boys after a vacation filled with relaxation and play with family, that returning to school is a good thing, Mondays don’t stink and Fridays aren’t the best day of the week.  Although I have been known (ask my girlfriends they can verify) to do my ‘happy dance’ on Fridays, especially at pickup! I want them to start finding meaning in every day. So I shall lead by example.

So I am happy it’s Monday and a new year! I returned to the gym on Saturday after my longest break (nine days)! And let me tell you, I was so sore during this morning’s workout that regular groans could be heard from my exercise room!  But I like the soreness because it confirms I worked the areas I wanted and change is happening. I set my workout clothes and sneakers next to my nightstand each night to reinforce my commitment.

I ate my way through vacation and put on an additional 2 pounds – yikes! But that is the past and today, I put in the work and am moving forward because vacation was meant to be fun and I truly enjoyed myself. We spent 10 days at my MIL’s house and our family from Florida flew in and we all played games, shared stories ate amazing food and had fun. My sister Maggie surprised us on Christmas day and flew in from her MIL’s to spend the holidays with us. My niece and nephew hung out with the boys and great memories were created. It was a nice break to re-charge myself.

I couldn’t believe how warm it was on Christmas. The picture above is before Leao and I went for a long walk with no coats and only short-sleeved shirts. Yes, it was that warm. I am so happy to have another year with this amazing man at my side.

I am very excited for this year and love the opportunity to re-arrange my work and life to create major changes. In future posts I will share more of my thoughts and goals for this year but I just wanted to check in to say, “I’m back!!” and to send you my warm wishes for this new year.

Have a blessed Monday my friends!

Belinda’s Book Nook Book Review: Soundless by Richelle Mead

soundless

Title: Soundless
Author: Richelle Mead
Copyright: November 10, 2015
Genre:  fantasy, YA fairytale and folklore adaptations
Format: book  Pages: 266

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

For as long as Fei can remember, there has been no sound in her village, where rocky terrain and frequent avalanches prevent residents from self-sustaining. Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom.

When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink and many go hungry. Fei’s home, the people she loves, and her entire existence is plunged into crisis, under threat of darkness and starvation.

But soon Fei is awoken in the night by a searing noise, and sound becomes her weapon.

My Thoughts:

The Lure: I heard about this book on BookTube and wanted to check it out for myself. No reviews were made yet, so I was able to go into this with only my own expectations.  The idea of incorporating Chinese folklore to shape this story was very appealing to me. I studied Japanese arts and Literature in college and since I was young something mystical has drawn me to Asian folklore in general. Another thing that drew me to this book was the idea of having a predominantly deaf set of characters. I wanted to see how the author would deliver this information.

The book: Let’s face it, the cover is gorgeous. I like the beautiful colors, typography and the strength the cover model portrays on the cover. I typically remove the dustjacket off of the books while I read so as not to damage them, but I actually kept this one on so that I could see pretty every time I sat down to read. It was a very short book with only 266 pages but I think the author delivered a great story in such a short framework.

The characters: I really enjoyed reading about the main character, Fei and was drawn to her work as an apprentice to capture the daily events  with her paint brush. Her love of her craft was inspiring and her strength throughout the book was also a pleasure to witness. Li Wei, the handsome miner was also fun to follow and their on and off banter, made for a slow romance to be realized. I enjoyed the intertwining of the folklore to shape the existence of these people and how it shaped their beliefs and behavior.

Pacing: I felt like this author did a great job with the pacing of this book. It was a fairly short book. If I had one wish I would like more elaboration on the folklore that was brought in more strongly towards the end.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and found that I breezed through it very quickly.  I would give it 4 1/2 butterflies because I really enjoyed the story and I found the inclusion of the folklore refreshing. Particularly with a book market that likes to reuse the same story over and over again. A true breath of fresh air this one was for me.

Tea Time Tuesday: It’s all Green Today with a side of News!

dec8_2015

Hello!  Wow, it is so dark and gray outside, that it  looks like rain or a major snow storm is upon us. Thankfully none of the above. Just gray and gloomy.  But oh so perfect for tea time.

Today, I chose a Green tea I bought from Wenham teahouse last spring. It’s called Cherry blossom Green tea. I steeped it about 3 minutes and headed up to my nook for a look at last Sunday’s newspapers. The tea is so soothing while I take in the current events.

I used have a Boston Globe subsription and then it began to be too much so I now purchase them a couple times a month. I also enjoy the New York Times so I bought both this past Sunday. What I do is pick out what sections I like and read them bit by bit throughout the week. Some weeks, I am a success and other weeks I get caught up and only one or two articles get read.

I tend not to to watch news on the television, because 90% is about death and morbid and I have young children in the house. I like reading news so that I can focus on integrity verses the onslaught of   sensationalism that is dominating our daily news channels. I also subscribe to The Washington Post on my Kindle and read a bit each day.  I enjoy the interactive elements in their articles. Another online resource I read is The Christian Science Monitor. I first must say I am a bit biased since I worked there for many years. But the quality and integrity of the reporting is top of the line.

I am going to go finish my tea and read another article before I head out to pick up my boys.

Hope you grabbed a cup of tea today!

Belinda
