Book Haul from the Used Book Superstore and Savers

sept2014haul

Ok so I confess, I love books.  Oh..you already knew that huh?  Well, earlier this week, I had a book attack. I just needed to be in a bookstore.  So I drove to the Used Book Superstore and it conveniently has next to it, Savers.  Both places I have scored some great deals.  This time was no exception.

At the Used Book Superstore I only found one book, Angel Burn by L.A. Weatherly which is a young adult fantasy. It’s book two in a trilogy so I will have to keep my eyes peeled for book one and three. I usually don’t buy out of order but this copy was signed. So I snatched it up for $3.29.

I then headed over to Savers and that’s where the magic happened. I found two hard cover books in brand new condition and two soft covers.

  • My Name is Memory by Ann Brashares who wrote The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants as well as a new one called, “The Here and Now”.  This book is about reincarnation and the love that lasts a lifetime. It sounds like a nice snuggle under the blanket fall day kind of book.
  • Savage Girl by Jean Zimmerman is  a tale from the author of The Orphanmaster about a wild girl from Nevada who lands in Manhattan’s Gilded Age society. The cover is so amazing on this book, I just can’t wait to dive in.
  • Huntress by Malinda Lo is the adventure prequel to Lo’s highly acclaimed novel Ash and is overflowing with lush Chinese influences and details inspired by the I Ching, and is filled with action and romance. Sounds like a fun read. The cover is beautiful on this book and let’s face it, I like kick-ass female leads.
  • The Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray is the first The Gemma Doyle Trilogy.  It is a young adult historical fiction set in the Victorian Age. I am thrilled to check out the first in the series to see if I should venture further.

If you read any of these books let me know what you think.

Well now I am off to go heat up some tea and continue reading my current bookclub selection, “Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder. I will leave a review soon.

Happy reading!

Fun Photos Friday #21: Outdoor Reading

Hello, happy Friday!

I think every year we welcome spring with open arms. The winters seem to be becoming more brutal and down right freezing.  So it makes the yearning for spring strong.  We have as you may have seen in older posts, a screened in deck.  During the winter we move things to our garage and throw a tarp over the table and chairs.  When we think it’s time, we will clean off everything and out will come all my pillows and decor and that becomes our sanctuary.

While it is still not quite warm enough, there is still another little place that is one of my favorite reading nooks that I can enjoy even before we can pull out the deck stuff. It’s on the stairs on the side that leads up to the deck.  It always gets really sunny and warm here. So on decent days recently I have come to spend my lunch hour reading and eating there.  Yesterday two beautiful Crocuses greeted me while I sat to read.  They are the first bloomers in my yard and they are sure sign of the warmth to come. Wahoo!!

I thought my book would look nice next to the flowers for the photo and help represent one of my favorite things to do – reading in nature. I am listening to one book club book on audio and reading a book from the library for another book club.  This one is an African American Historical fiction.  I will be sure to put a review up when I complete both.

Well I hope you all get to find some time with nature even a few minutes. After this long winter, I welcome every opportunity.

Have a blessed weekend!

Belinda’s Book Nook: My Love affair with Books

Lately I have just been so engrossed with books that it has got me thinking about my on-again and off-again love affair with books. I can’t remember exactly what book that was the turning point for me, but as a child I remember reading Ann of Green Gables and loving it. I loved how they transported me everywhere. I would sit in my bedroom and read my favorites feeling like I was the luckiest girl to have it.

When I reached high school, boys were on the brain and I slowed my pace. I also remember resentment at some of the school selections I had to read and it souring me a bit.

In addition to the fictions I was reading while in college, I became exposed to more African American History books so I tried to learn more about my heritage.  I always still felt that warm feeling when I went inside bookstores and perused the shelves for a great find.  I began to find pleasure in the hunt for the next book.

Right after college, I read mostly in the summer at the beach. I discovered chick lit and would tear through them like a good chocolate bar. It was a welcome break from the serious non-fiction that I was previously reading.

While working my second real job out of college at a newspaper, I renewed my love of books.  I got exposure to many genres I never knew existed. I started reading historical fictions, mysteries, science fictions, biographies, non-fictions and realized there was so much more to books.

I joined a book club at one point and was exposed to the joy of talking books with friends. We would pick a book and meet once a month at each others’ house bringing food to eat while we discussed our selection.

After I married, I was focused mostly on my career and read mostly on vacations. I would call them my beach reads.

Years, later after my two beautiful boys were born, I struggled to find the time and energy to devote to my first love (books) and stopped completely for  a short spell.

For the last few years, I have renewed my vows with my first love and can’t get enough of them. I am opening up to even more experiences (YA, paranormal, dystopian, self-help) and so happy to have books in my life again.

Have you ever thought about your journey with books? Are they just something you do on vacation or has it been a long love affair with ups and downs?

Happy Reading!

Reunited with paperbacks

Books I bought at the local bookstore in Chatham called, Where the Sidewalk Ends.

Books I bought at the local bookstore in Chatham called, Where the Sidewalk Ends.

I consider myself an avid reader who can’t get enough of books. Severals years ago, I remember being on the fence about whether to take the plunge and buy an e-reader or support books and bookstores.  I can’t tell you how much books mean to me except they take a large place in my heart.  I began to realize that my home had been invaded with books. I would read them and not want to let them go. I would donate a few here and there but knew that I would run out of places to store them in my home. Finally I bought my first e-reader it was a Kindle.

I remember still feeling a bit conflicted. So I developed a regular habit of going the library and my local bookstore. I visited the library at least two times a month and went to the bookstore once a week and grabbed a few books and sat in the cafe skimming through them.  I love looking at all the amazing jacket covers. Let’s face it, the people that design book covers are incredibly talented because I am a sucker for a great cover.

One thing that I have noticed is that independent bookstores are becoming extinct and even brick and mortar bookstores are facing hard times.  So when we went on our anniversary vacation, I made it a point to find the local bookstores and make some purchases. I did this with the intention of supporting them and to reunite me with the book.

I now have a Nook HD and still enjoy the portability of my library of books but I am finding balance by buying books on occasion at bookstores.

I look forward to reading these three new books and will be sure to include reviews in Belinda’s Book Nook.

Have a blessed day!
