Happy Monday…Nope, I missed it!!

nov28b

Hey you! How are you? Well I might have to start a Happy Tuesday posts since I keep missing Monday!

First let me just tell you right now that I am drinking a new tea today and it is from a company called Tea Guys. The flavor that I’m drinking is called peppermint chocolate vanilla. It is a rooibos tea blend and it’s delicious. I tend to drink a lot of caffeinated tea because I drink chai and green tea. I don’t like artificial flavors so I often avoid the caffeine free. I tend to be a bit of a tea snob and have been known to ask for hot water in restaurants so I can use the tea I bring with me. But during the cleanse I picked up and found a bunch of really nice caffeine free teas. So as I write this post I keep sniffing and sipping on this yummy tea. If you see it try it. the aroma alone will knock your socks off.nov28aI’ve been busy with little projects here and there and trying to wrap up some things so I didn’t get to sit down yesterday to write. But let’s celebrate the New England Patriot’s winning the game yesterday. It was a real nail biter all the way down to the last minute I pretty much paced the floor and yelled at the TV for the last 30 minutes of the game.nov28fThanksgiving was wonderful and we spent it with my in-laws. My mother-in-law is one of the most amazing cooks that I know in both taste and presentation. As you know I had just come off of my cleanse so I was able to enjoy the meal fully. Even though I did indulge in a few glasses of wine and some pie I still approached it very mindfully and think that this time around a lot of my habits that I took from the cleanse will stick.nov28c Of course we stayed over my in-laws for several days and played games and talked each night. Some of the games that we like to play is Skipbo which is a card game and we also like to play a dice game called Greed. Apollo introduced us all to Bananagrams. Which is a fantastic word game with letter tiles similar to Scrabble. I love Scrabble and word games in general so this was great. We also brought some DVDs and watch the classic Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. But the most important thing is that we were all together and I don’t take this time for granted.nov28dWe also played Old Maid and guess who was the Old Maid?  Me!!!! Why do I always lose that game?

Silhouette Sunday #20: Shaped Holiday Cards

shapedcard1Hello!! It’s Silhouette Sunday and I have been playing in my craft room for hours today and just enjoying the sound of my machine making magic while I assemble these beauties and select papers for other projects. In fact, I was having so much fun, that I am just now sitting down to share with you my project.shapedcard3With Thanksgiving complete, I thought I would start on my holiday cards and fun home decor projects for the winter months. Today’s cut file came from the Silhouette Design Store which if you haven’t heard, all designs are 50% off for a limited time. That’s a steal!! So I am loading up on files in my wishlist.shapedcard2I was attracted to this card because it is a shaped card. I like how it’s shape silhouette’s the scenery. I also like that it requires very few color papers so I could cut and quickly get to the assembling.

I decided I wanted something between the card base and the house so I hand-cut some silver paper to put behind each house.

shapedcard4The picture doesn’t do these cards justice. They are so cute. I hate to part with them!!shapedcard5

Now I must focus on my football game! Hope you had a great week and I will see you next Sunday to share another cute project.

Happy crafting!!

Silhouette Sunday #19: Pencil Topper Gifts

silhouettesundaynov17_2016

Hello Everyone! It’s been a long time since I posted to Silhouette Sunday (over a year to be exact!). But finding balance to meet all of my commitments is an on-going process. One thing for sure is I still absolutely love my Silhouette machine and use it regularly. I have my eye on the new one but that’s talk for another day (Shhh…). Today I wanted to share with you the cutest little cut file I bought to make gifts for Apollo and his classmates.

silhouettesundaynov17_2016b

It is a turkey pencil topper (#35387). I purchased on sale for 74 cents and downloaded the file from Silhouette’s Design store. Now that is a bargain. Then I marched over to my paper bins to see what I have that I could use for this project. I am always looking for ways to utilize the paper that I have amassed over the years. This was the perfect project to do just that. I used assorted sheets of paper and cardstock in the same hues but different patterns. I bought these inexpensive jars and wrapped a coordinating thread that I bought a while back at the Target dollar section. I thought it spruced up the jar a bit. I must say they look so cute in my craft room that I almost hate to see them go!

silhouettesundaynov17_2016cI will be delivering them to Apollo’s class tomorrow so they have a fun surprise before heading off to the Thanksgiving holiday. I will be back next week to share with you another Silhouette. I have amassed so many cut files and created so many of my own, that I have ample amount to share.

Happy crafting my friends!

Belinda’s Book Nook Review: The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi

theicarusgirl

Title: The Icarus Girl
Author: Helen Oyeyemi
Copyright: April 11, 2006
Genre: fiction
Format: book Pages: 352

So I finally started this book that I’ve had since my birthday.  I thought that this book might sound good if I read the entire book outloud. I decided that I give it a try. I wanted to hear my mouth try to pronounce the names and hear the words coming through my lips as opposed to just in my head.It started off fine and then challenges presented themselves when my kids arrived home from school early on half days or my husband working from home. So finding time to read out loud needed to be scheduled. Early mornings mid-day when the kids are at school are the prime times when I was able to do this. I was successful for much of the reading of this book.

Quick Synopsis (from Goodreads):

Jessamy “Jess” Harrison, age eight, is the child of an English father and a Nigerian mother. Possessed of an extraordinary imagination, she has a hard time fitting in at school. It is only when she visits Nigeria for the first time that she makes a friend who understands her: a ragged little girl named TillyTilly. But soon TillyTilly’s visits become more disturbing, until Jess realizes she doesn’t actually know who her friend is at all. Drawing on Nigerian mythology, Helen Oyeyemi presents a striking variation on the classic literary theme of doubles — both real and spiritual — in this lyrical and bold debut.

My Thoughts:

I had heard about Helen Oyeyemi about a few years back and then last year on Booktube. Then a show that I watch that talks to author’s about books interviewed her. So my approach to this author and her works is to take the opportunity and the time to explore all of her writings to date in the order published. I don’t always do this but I would like to see how she evolves as a writer from book to book and what similarities or common themes she may have throughout her books. I also really wanted to just hear her stories and learn more about Nigeria and it’s people through her stories. Of course my other motive was to support a black female author.

This book was written by Oyeyemi while she attending college and published at the age of 19 started out very strong. I felt very engaged while reading this story. There were a few areas where the pacing slowed a bit too much but she was building up background information. I think she did a great job of trying to convey the feelings of a biracial child trying to find friendship and ward off bullies. The main character, Jess was a bit of an introvert but wanted to try to figure out how to navigate the world of friendships. Oyeyemi did include the challenges that a young girl of mixed race growing up in a predominantly white environment.

I really enjoyed the way that Oyeyemi included so much detail that help to bring the story to life. For example, I like the description of the grandfathers wrinkles and the lighting in the room and the aromas that she smells when she arrives in Nigeria for the first time. She captured the senses well.

One thing that bothered me about in this book was her portrayal of Jessamy’s father. He is a British white male and his wife is a Nigerian woman and he came off as very weak to me in the book.  There’s were many instances where I just wanted him to have a backbone. The first few instances of that happening in the story I just brushed off as him being a person who wants to avoid conflict and keep the peace. But after a while it just felt like it felt like it was a deliberate characteristic she intended to portray. Perhaps to balance out the stronger characteristics of the wife (Jess’s mom). I do wish she provided more background information of the father. Perhaps that would have brought to light the reasoning for his behavior.

I found the story very interesting and the only thing is the ending that bothers me. I will leave that for any of you that decide to reads it to see what you decipher. I would love to hear from anyone that has read it because I’m not really sure but there was a bit confusion on my part with the ending.

Overall, I would recommend the book and look forward to reading her other books.

Happy reading!

Belinda
